The Ultimate Hook

Matthew 6:33 “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

In songwriting, the chorus is always the most important element of any composition. It is often called “the hook” because it’s the part of the song that people can’t get out of their heads after hearing it. My friend Elmo and I started making music together decades ago, but last night he was reminding me again of the importance of the hook.

“Remember that singer that I introduced you to? She spends so much time promoting herself on Instagram, but she doesn’t focus on creating a catchy hook for her songs. But all the hustle of social media doesn’t yield results if you don’t get that hook right. It’s like she’s missed Songwriting 101… the basics of the whole game.

If you get the hook right, then the rest of the song will follow. Then the brand identity and the promotion for that track will fall into place too. It’s kind of how you talk about God. If you just get your relationship with Him right then everything else naturally follows. I guess God is the ultimate hook!”

Lord, you are indeed the ultimate hook. I can’t get you outta my head, nor do I want to. And I know that if I can just seek first your kingdom, all these things will be added to me as well. I love you so much. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
