The God Mindset

1 Corinthians 15:57 “But thanks be to God, for He gives us the victory, through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

[Yesterday I gave a sermon about The God Mindset. You can see the recording here (sermon starts at 26:20) https://www.facebook.com/solomonsporchsg/videos/2585546871774019/ ]

Stanford Psychologist Carol Dweck ran an experiment asking children who had solved a puzzle successfully whether they wanted another puzzle that was easier or more difficult than the one they had just solved. Those who asked for an easier puzzle she found had a “fixed mindset” and tended to believe that ability was a fixed quantity and did not change over time. Those who asked for the more difficult puzzle she deemed “growth mindset” kids because they believed that ability changed over time, and so the main input into success was effort. Growth mindset kids tended to perform better on their SATs, and in the workplace, because over time they tended to well… grow more. I love how science outlines the beauty of the universe God created for us, but science often leaves something to be desired. It can’t answer the most fundamental questions of why we exist as an example. In the context of mindset, I found the framework revelatory and the world found it revolutionary, but as believers we know that success doesn’t come from ability, nor does it come from our effort. God does give us gifts and wants us to colabor with Him, but ultimately our victory comes from God himself. If we believe in a God who loves us then we’ll believe in a God who wants the best for us. If we believe in a God who is all-powerful, then we’ll believe in a God who is capable of giving the best for us. Both those concepts are clear as day in the Bible. If you believe those two things, then you have to believe that victory is inevitable, and the source of that victory is God. I’ve found that the more I align myself with this truth, not just in my head but truly in my heart, the more miraculous events take place in my life. I dream bigger, I take more spiritual risk and I seek out obstacles because they are opportunities to demonstrate God’s power. Holy Spirit I ask for more of you today. Align me more with the truth of the God Mindset, that victory is mine and that you are its source. In Jesus’ most precious name, Amen.
