Numbers 4:29 “Now record the names of the members of the Merarite division of the tribe of Levi.” Today I found myself thumbing through Numbers 4 and noticed that God had incredibly specific tasks in store for each tribe, clan and individual. The Levites served as priests (this much I had remembered), but within that various clans had different duties. For example, the Kohathite Clan packed the most sacred objects of the Tabernacle when moving camp, while the Merarites were exclusively responsible for carrying the load. Furthermore, each “frame, crossbar, post and base” was assigned to a specific individual within the clan. It reminded me that God has a very specific calling for each of us, “the place where your deep gladness meets the world’s deep need” as Frederick Buechner asserted. Many of us spend most of our lives aspiring to what we “ought” to do as defined by others, rather than what we must do according to the stirring Holy Spirit places in our hearts. I know I certainly have. But thankfully He speaks and we have the privilege of hearing His call. God thanks for having the best in store for us. Thank you for sending your son so that I can have relationship with you and hear your voice. Thank you for drawing me closer to you and your calling for me with each passing day. I love you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
