Genesis 12:1 The LORD had said to Abram, "Go from your country, your people and your father's household to the land I will show you.”
In Genesis 12, God called Abram to uproot his family and go “to a land I will show you.” God didn’t reveal the address, whether there was a mall nearby or whether the neighbors would be nice. He just said “go.. and I’ll show you the rest.” Abram knew that God had a good plan, so he followed the call despite not knowing the details. When God called me to make videos, I had a lot of questions about how it would make any sense. I had no prior experience, I had no time, and I couldn’t see how it would help support any of the goals I had for my life. But I eventually obeyed and God gave me not only one of the most powerful tools I have as a VC, but also a family project that has brought me closer to my kids. In the past several months, I’ve felt God calling me to write and release music again. I had the same questions… “Lord, I’m really busy and how the heck can I justify spending any time on this at all in the midst of everything?” But again I knew I had to submit if I truly believed in His goodness. Well, I ended up writing a song about one of our portfolio companies and after I sent it to the team I recently received a reply that started with “Wow. This is so amazing! I love it! Talk about above and beyond.”
VC’s are always brainstorming differentiated ways to add value to their portfolio companies. I’ve spent countless hours on the task and never in my wildest dreams would have thought that writing a song could check the box. I don’t think there’s any other VC in the world that does this, which is probably why I never thought of it. But God doesn’t need to follow investors. Investors need to follow God.
Lord, it’s incredible how you always come through, especially when I don’t understand your plan. I pray for faster and more whole-hearted submission to your will with each passing day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
